HEAD GARDENER

Job Title: HEAD GARDENER / TEAM LEADER

Based : Within 30 mile radius of Hambleden (RG9 6RT) 

Hours: Part to full time. Normally 4 hour shifts between 9am-5pm Monday-Friday but we are flexible in terms of the number of hours / shifts you choose to work and are very happy to employ on a school time / term time basis (or similar) for those with other jobs, caring responsibilities or the wish for flexible working hours

Salary: Dependent upon skills and experience


Job Purpose: You will be a key part of THE FLOWER UNION gardening team. You will be passionate and knowledgable about plants, plant care, garden maintenance and garden management. You will be qualified to an RHS Level 3 (or similar) or will have demonstrable professional gardening experience. You will supervise a team of trainee gardeners (and occasional volunteers) to meet our aims and objectives as a Social Enterprise.  You will have great people management and client relationship skills and will assist in making sure that our beneficiaries receive appropriate supervision and gardens are maintained to a very high standard. You will help with immediate and long term garden task management, soft landscaping, planting plans as well as general maintenance tasks, such as mulching, pruning, leaf clearing, mowing and weeding, trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants maintenance (though these will not be your primary tasks). You will help with plant propagation in our new micro nursery. 


 YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES 


  • Managing small gardening teams to complete regular gardening maintenance tasks to a high standard
  • Fulfilling seasonally appropriate gardening tasks 
  • Planning and communicating required future gardening tasks
  • Maintaining high safety standards as per company policy 
  • Maintaining good relationships with each individual client
  • Assisting in the training and education of our beneficiaries
  • Conducting monthly reviews of our beneficiaries to ensure their progress and development


REQUIREMENTS

NECESSARY


  • Significant practical experience in horticulture supported and / or relevant qualifications (RHS Level 3 or equivalent)
  • Organised and communicative, with a willingness to work in a timely and professional fashion
  • Social and cheery, with a desire to motivate and assist other team members 
  • Excellent knowledge of plants and plant care
  • Competent with the use and maintenance of garden machinery including hedge trimmers, push mowers, strimmers, leaf blowers
  • Motivated and hard-working, able to work happily in all weathers (though we do adjust our workload accordingly) 
  • Collaborative, compassionate and empathetic
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the UK
  • Suitable and appropriate gardening clothing (including gloves and safety boots)
  • Willingness to travel to different client gardens within 30 miles of RG9 6RT


DESIRABLE

  • Driver with own vehicle 
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation and practice
  • Experienced working knowledge of therapeutic horticulture

TRAINEE GARDENER

Job Title: TRAINEE GARDENER

Based : Within 30 mile radius of Hambleden (RG9 6RT)

Salary: £9.50 (under 19s) / £12.50 hr for initial trial period then rising to £15/hr once our standard set of skills has been attained


Job Purpose: You will be a key part of THE FLOWER UNION gardening team. You will want to learn about gardens and gardening. You will be or want to become skilled, confident and knowledgable about plants, plant care, garden maintenance and garden management. You will be trained and supervised by the knowledgeable and experienced  Head Gardener / Team Leader and will work alongside the rest of THE FLOWER UNION team to meet our aims and objectives as a Social Enterprise.  


 YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES 


  • Working with the Head Gardener / Team Leader & the rest of the gardening team to complete seasonal gardening tasks including ; mowing, strimming & edging lawns, raking leaves, weeding bed & borders, pruning shrubs & trees 
  • Ensuring that every garden is left neat and tidy
  • Fulfilling any appropriate tasks the Head Gardener / Team Leader requires (e.g. emptying wheelbarrows, sorting and cleaning tools, cleaning & organising the vans)
  • Maintaining high standards as per company policy 


REQUIREMENTS

  • Motivated and hard-working
  • Willingness to learn
  • Able to work happily in all weathers (though we do adjust our workload accordingly and you are not obliged to work at any time)
  • Organised and communicative, with a willingness to work in a timely and professional fashion
  • Collaborative and empathetic (though you are not required to be social)
  • Ability to handle and lift items weighing between 0-50 pounds
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the UK
  • Suitable and appropriate gardening clothing (including gloves and safety boots)
  • Desire to be part of a growing Social Enterprise


DESIRABLE

  • Willingness to work varied hours or days based on the needs of the Social Enterprise 
  • Driver with own vehicle or ability to travel to RG9 6RT for shared transport
  • Existing horticultural qualifications or desire to achieve horticultural qualifications

TRAINEE FLORIST

Job Title: TRAINEE FLORIST

Based : in Hambleden (RG9 6RT) & Temple, Marlow (SL7)

Hours: Flexible, but including regular weekend work. 

Salary: £9.50 (under 18s) / £12.50 hr for initial trial period then rising to £15/hr


Job Purpose: You will be a key part of THE FLOWER UNION floristry team. You will learn how to grow and arrange seasonal flowers and become confident In your ability to produce a whole range of beautiful floral products. You will be trained and supervised by the knowledgable and experienced Head Florist and will work alongside the rest of THE FLOWER UNION team to meet our aims and objectives as a Social Enterprise.


YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES 


  • Conditioning and caring for all our cut flowers 
  • Helping to grow seasonal cut flowers including ; digging, weeding, seed sowing, plant propagation and soil / compost care
  • Arranging and delivering floral arrangements, preparing bouquets and bespoke orders. Designing and arranging wedding and event flowers  
  • helping to fulfill e-commerce orders and offline deliveries
  • Ensuring that every product that leaves the flower studio is to the highest quality and standard
  • Fulfilling any appropriate tasks the Head Florist requires (e.g., ordering, packaging, or logistics)
  • Maintaining high standards of flower hygiene and safety standards as per company policy 
  • Keeping the flower studio clean and tidy
  • Keeping the delivery vans clean and tidy


REQUIREMENTS

NECESSARY


  • Have an interest in a career in floristry
  • Have a naturally creative eye
  • Ability to work to deadlines and cope with the last minute stress intrinsic to Weddings & Event work
  • Ability to work in a low temperature environment (our studio is unheated and sometimes actively chilled)
  • Ability to work outside in the Flower Garden with suitable gardening clothing (including gloves and safety boots) during all weathers
  • Ability to work at The Flower Studio which is located in Bisham, Marlow and the Flower Garden which is located in Hambleden, RG9 6RT
  • Ability to work some weekends 
  • Motivated and hard-working, able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Organised, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work to deadlines
  • Collaborative, communicative and hardworking
  • Ability to handle and lift items weighing between 0-50 pounds
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the UK


DESIRABLE

  • Knowledge of flowers and seasonality
  • Willingness to work flexible hours based on needs
  • Driver with clean driving licence

VOLUNTEERS


Whatever your level of skill (or otherwise) we welcome volunteers to join us for a pre-agreed volunteering session in our flower studio, cutting garden  or micro nursery.

Volunteering sessions are generally for 4 hours each and you will be asked to help with tasks such as ;

  • taking cuttings (you will be guided on how to do so)
  • picking flowers
  • conditioning flowers
  • sorting flowers
  • drying flowers
  • cleaning vases
  • vase / prop organisation
  • Flower Studio tidying
